- Steve Serra, Vice President of Henry Ford Health Products; a division of Henry Ford Health System.
The Challenge
Website Design
- Create easy to read descriptions and quality product images out of poor quality descriptions and images.
- Make it easy to use commercial insurance or Medicare to pay for medical products online.
- Help a large business integrate an eCommerce site into their existing processes.
The Solution
Visual Design
The look and feel of the site were created by working with the Henry Ford Health System webmaster to conform to some of the conventions from the HenryFord.com website and with Daniel Brian & Associates, Henry Ford Health Products' advertising agency, to match the designs that are going onto delivery vans, billboards, brochures, and other marketing material.

Information Architecture
We worked with Henry Ford Health Products to pull together a database of products that they carry and then we added high quality product images and descriptions to be shown on the website. The products are organized into categories and subcategories for display on the site. Many administrative functions can be performed on both individual products or entire categories to make managing the site easier.
In dealing with medical products we had to manage a lot more information about products than a standard eCommerce site would need to, dealing with extra rules for insurance payments. Pulling this information together helped us to automate and simplify the purchasing process for customers.
Functionality / Usability
A great deal of time and effort was dedicated to making the checkout process as simple as possible. Most people cannot read their insurance cards effectively enough to tell us all of the information on it and cards will contain different information such as the group number, policy number, and insurer contact information making it nearly impossible to ask for the right information from each person.
Other challenges include collecting patient documents like written prescriptions from doctors or assignment of benefits forms for the insurers' files. We worked with Henry Ford Health Products to determine what the best methods for collecting documents, signatures, and other information from customers.
